Ductless Split Systems

Ductless split systems are home air conditioning and heating systems that can heat and cool your home. These types of systems do not require a duct system to distribute the hot or cold air around your home. Instead, ductless splits are made up of an outdoor condensor unit and one or more indoor units that contain the air handler and blowers that help to circulate the air.  Refrigerant lines are all that connect the outdoor condensor to the indoor units.

Without needing ductwork, ductless splits can be installed in any room or addition in your home. Additionally, not having ducts means no worrying about what's collecting in them. Ductwork can be an issue when all types of indoor air contaminants sit in the ducts, causing there to be indoor air quality problems.

 

Heat Pumps

The main function of a heat pump is that it moves heat from one area to another.  Heat pumps are different than furnaces, in that they do not use fuel to burn and create heat, heat pumps generate and extract their own heat. In the winter, they take heat from the outside air and transfer it to the indoor air, which is then circulated through your home.

In summer, the process is reversed, and your heat pump can remove heat from you indoor air and send it outside to keep the indoors cool. The heat pump system can virtually cool and heat in one whole unit.

 

R-22 and R-410A Refrigerant

Since 2010, supplies of R-22 have dropped each year as they are transitioning from the o-zone depleting R-22 to systems that will rely on refrigerant R-410A. R-22 can still be used in servicing existing equipment until 2020, but the price will continue to rise as it gets harder to locate R-22 as supplies deplete, since R-22 is no longer being manufactured.  NewSystems are now specifically designed for R-410A refrigerant. R-410A refrigerant was actually invented in Buffalo, NY by Allied Signal, now known as Honeywell Corporation. The main benefit of  R-410A is that it is better for the environment. Other refrigerants, such as R-22, cause damage to the ozone layer.
